Liberation 75 Formal address and raising of the Union Flag

Online Event

Event Overview

Aerial footage will kick the address off, capturing The Bailiff who will speak from the same balcony of the Royal Court building that Alexander Coutanche spoke from in the Royal Square 75 years ago.

He will speak of the determination and resilience of Islanders at a time when restrictions are placed on our lives in 2020 – the very strengths upon which Islanders relied during the freedoms imposed on them during The Occupation.

His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor, Air Chief Marshal Stephen Dalton GCB will then read a special message from Her Majesty the Queen to the People of Jersey from Government House.

Following this, The Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Michael Keirle will complete the address by reading a prayer from the Parish Church of St Helier.

The Union Flag will then be raised live upon the Pomme d’Or Hotel, - as is tradition each year – re-enacting the moment the Island was liberated from occupation when British soldiers climbed up the balcony in Liberation Square to hoist the flag. The Flag will be raised by Captain Brian Nibbs, during which the National Anthem will be played.

Finally, verses of ‘Beautiful Jersey’ will be sung to conclude the event.
